Ghost mushrooms are part of a rare group of organisms that produce their own light. The scientific name for this particular species is “Omphalotus nidiformis” and they are native to Australia. They have bioluminescent properties, which makes them emit a soft green glow at night. They grow on decaying plant material such as stumps, dead or near dead trees and are most commonly found during autumn, when the weather becomes cooler & more wet.
It is a very unique experience to see the Ghost mushrooms. I treasure very much the experiences I have had seeing these small wonders of the world. It does take a little bit of effort, as one has to fend off millions of mosquito and sometimes stumping along muddy paths in the very dark forest, but it is all worth it. If you are one who is a little scared of the dark I do recommend going along with a friend, as it is most often extremely dark in the forest at night where they are found.
