Flying foxes are large bats. There’s 7 different species in Australia. This is a Grey-headed Flying Fox which is native to Australia. They feed on fruits, flowers, pollen and nectar and play a very important role in ensuring the survival of rainforests and keeping the ecosystems healthy.
Their food is seasonal, so they are nomadic and will move hundreds of miles to follow food sources.
During the day, they generally stay together in clusters of large numbers. In these “camps” they hang and sleep until dusk. As the sun sets they all take off for the night in search of food. They’ll fly up to 40km away from their camp to feed.
To watch these huge numbers of bats take off at dusk is an incredible sight. We have a “camp” in our neighbourhood and when they all take off more or less at once it’s like a scene out of a spooky movie. An experience not to miss.
